Michael Anthony

It was a strong desire to stay out of the youth gang environment where he grew up that inspired Michael Anthony to learn self-defense. He began his Taekwondo training in 1974 in Salem, Massachusetts under Chung Do Kwan Master Hak Joo Lee. It didn’t take long for him to learn that the avoidance of a confrontation was superior to winning one.

Master Anthony is currently a 7th degree black belt certified by the Kukkiwon and has been teaching Taekwondo since 1980. Beverly Blue Wave Taekwondo classes focus on the traditional martial arts and self-defense aspects of Olympic-style Taekwondo.

Master Anthony has also trained extensively in Ju Gar and Wing Chun Kung Fu under Master Kenneth Wong. In addition, he is a founding member of the Boston Guardian Angels and spent more than 20 years with PRTM as an operations specialist. He has worked in security and personal protection for more than a decade and is a Personal Defense Readiness certified coach under the Bauer Tactical close quarters defense system. Drawing on this background, he has created and implemented the Blue Wave Self Defense curriculum.

Beverly Blue Wave Taekwondo is a great community of very diverse people who respect and help one another, Master Anthony said. "We have school teachers, carpenters, IT people, a PhD candidate, engineers, police officers and social workers. It’s quite a mix and it’s great to see everyone working together."

Beverly Blue Wave Assistant Instructors

There are three master level instructors and five instructor level black belts and four assistant instructors at Beverly Blue Wave. Grand Master instructor Tae Sung Lee visits the school annually from Korea to conduct advanced training classes. Presently only adults are trained.

"I’m blessed to have several junior masters who have trained with me for over 20 years, as well as three fourth degree black belts who have trained for more than 15 years with me," Master Anthony said. "They are truly just as close as my family to me."

Master Mark S. Rathbun has been training in Taekwondo for more than 20 years and is currently a 6th degree black belt. He was previously a national level competitor and now focuses on the Blue Wave self-defense program. A certified Blauer Tactical PDR Coach, Master Rathbun is sought out by many interested in learning how to improve their close-quarter combative techniques.

Mr. John Kwiatek is currently a 4th Dan Black Belt in the Blue Wave Taekwondo Association. He started taking Taekwondo classes with Master Anthony in the Beverly Blue Wave gym in 1993, and has competed several sparring competitions. In 1997 Mr. Kwiatek traveled with other members of the Blue Wave Taekwondo Association to Washington D.C. for the World Chung Do Kwon Championships, and won a Bronze medal for sparring in the red belt division.

Master Joseph Anastasi has been training in Taekwondo since 1989 and is currently a 5th degree black belt. A former national level competitor, Master Anastasi has also trained extensively in Korea.

Mr. Brian Anton is currently a 4th degree black belt who also teaches at the Beverly dojang. He has trained extensively in Taekwondo both in the United States and in Korea with Grand Master Lee. Mr. Anton also assists teaching the advanced level classes.

Mr. Jonathan Scoglio is currently a 4th degree black belt and has been training with Master Anthony for almost 20 years. He has also attended Olympic style competition seminars held by U.S. gold medalists and assists in teaching the SPEAR PDR system of self-defense/self-awareness.
